For seven years, the Carry the Vision Community Nonviolence Conference has provided people in the South Bay a chance to gather, meet one another, and build bridges of peace and understanding in the community- including religious communities, governmental agencies, and educational groups.
This year, the conference will take place on Saturday, October 2, 2010, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, on the grounds of Santa Clara University. Keynote speakers this year will include Fr. John Dear, Peace Activist, Organizer, Lecturer, Retreat leader, and author/editor of 20 books on peace and nonviolence, including Put Down Your Sword, A Persistent Peace, and Living Peace. Fr. Dear was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The afternoon keynote address will be given by the Rev. Dr. Barnard Lafayette, a colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King, co-founder of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in 1960, and authority on nonviolent social change.
Planned Workshops include Modern Day Satyagraha: Small Acts of Kindness with Nipun Mehta of Charity Focus; Practicing Nonviolence with Fr. John Dear; Nonviolence Projects in Developing Countries, Supriya Banavalikar. There will also be discussion panels on Empowering Youth for A Peaceful Future; The Role of Religion in Promoting Nonviolence; and Protecting Our Families: Preventing Domestic Violence.
Cost for the day is $20.00 for general admission paid in advance; $25.00 if paid at the door; $10.00 for youth. Register online.
