FOR FOUR DAYS recently, I attended the seventh International Conference on Peace and Non-Violent Action, in Jaipur, India.
The event — held from Nov. 10 through Nov. 14 — was organized by the Jain community of India.
I was among delegates from Europe, the United States, Japan, and Southeast Asia who shared research on the economics of nonviolence.
Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, the former president of India who gave India the missile in 1974, shared his wisdom with Archarya Mahapragya, Jain’s community and spiritual leader.
Nearly 10 years ago, Mahapragya challenged Kalam to speak out on behalf of peace.
From that encounter, Kalam put all of his energy into that dare. Both men exchanged thoughts and ideas and eventually wrote the book, “The Family and the Nation.”
