Queen Elizabeth II, visiting the historic Green Mosque in Turkey on May 14, traded her familiar broad white hat for a grey headscarf and removed her shoes to enter the mosque.
The queen is in Turkey for a series of state visits, and planned to visit several mosques during her time there.
Many Turkish citizens were delighted by the queen’s show of respect. ““It makes me happy and proud, and it would be nice if leaders respected each other’s religions like this more often,” said one local observer.
