Oklahoma Legislators to return Qur’ans

Some 24 Oklahoma lawmakers plan to return copies of the Qur’an that they received from the Governor’s Ethnic American Advisory Council following one legislator’s claims that the Qur’an condones the killing of innocent women and children “in the name of ideology.”

State Rep. Rex Duncan reportedly said that he had researched the Qur’an on the Internet. “That’s exactly what it says,” Duncan said. “I think it’s pretty straightforward. By their own admission, those are the exact words. They don’t all practice that.”

Too bad the enterprising representative didn’t do a similar online search of the text of the Bible. He might have uncovered a few more “straightforward” statements like:

  • The city and all that is in it shall be devoted to the LORD for destruction. Only Ra’hab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall live because she hid the messengers we sent. (Joshua 6:17 )
  • Now go and attack Am’alek, and utterly destroy all that they have; do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.'” (1Samuel 15:3 )
  • Happy shall they be who take your little ones
and dash them against the rock! (Psalm 137:9)

I suspect that Rep. Duncan would object that these statements are taken out of context and they don’t actually mean what they seem to say. Exactly. It is the height of arrogance to tell someone what their sacred text “really” says.
