DeAnza Students Request Interfaith Room

Students at DeAnza College in Cupertino have requested that the new Campus Center include a place for people to go for prayer or just a quiet place to get away from the stresses of student life.

Some have raised concerns about separation of church and state issues, and have proposed that it be called something like the “Peace Room,” rather than emphasizing the interfaith aspect. There is opposition to the idea of such a space– one Christian student could not conceive of how it would be possible for different faiths to share a room. “[Christians] can”t worship with [Muslims]. They have different Gods.”

Perhaps such a space would provide an opportunity for students to learn how to respect one another”s religious traditions and how to build relationships in a multi-religious environment.
