“Sikhs respect us, not suspect us,” said Monsignor Felix Machado, Under Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue at the Vatican in his introductory remarks to a joint meeting of Sikhs and Catholics at the United Nations Church Center in May. Although Catholics and Sikhs have long worked side by side in interfaith endeavors, this was the first time that key leaders of both groups in the United States had gathered for dialogue.
Representatives of the US Catholic Conference of Bishops and Sikhs from the America Region of the World Sikh Council discussed common concerns about the challenges facing immigrants, issues of religious and human rights in South Asia, and the impact of secularism on both traditions.
Attendees committed themselves to gather again around the theme “Divinity, Humanity, and Creation,” and to continue meeting annually.
The one-day conference was sponsored by Religions for Peace – USA.
