Last week, Gertrude Welch received the McEntee Lifetime Achievement Award from the Santa Clara County Office of Human Relations in recognition of her longtime commitment to peacemaking, justice, and human rights.
I first came to know Gertrude through work with the Council of Churches of Santa Clara County. She was an energetic and enthusiastic worker for peace, putting in long hours in planning, educating and advocating for justice for the poorest in our community and for peace in the world. Over the years, she has been one of those faithful people working across the lines of religion, race, and economic status, showing what can be accomplished when we work together. We are fortunate to have her and people like her in our midst.
Several other people received recognition for their work, including Samina Faheem Sundas, executive director of the American Muslim Voice, which builds bridges with people of Asian, European, Latino and African heritage. We are fortunate to have her and people like Gertrude and Samina in our midst.
